When you mention that out of 64 possible explainations for decay, most are internal conflict, external conflict, climate change, I'd like to point out that this might be one big conglomerate of the same reason: climate change might cause big internal and external conflicts. It would be half of all reasons, then?

Yes climate change is definitely connected with all of those and there are collapse scholars who basically attribute almost anything to climate alone. However, the tricky thing is then to explain why different societies reacted differently to the same climate forcing. This means we always have to consider the state of the society as well and so I think it is okay to count these as separate reasons.
